Pedestrian frontier crossing point the Vltava Spring – Siebensteinkopf

The distance from Kvilda is about 20 km. Together with opening of the frontier crossing point Modrý sloup, two further checkpoints to Bavaria were opened on 15th July 2009 - one beneath Poledník mountain and another in vicinity of the Vltava springs. Though they have remained in the shadow of widely discussed Modrý sloup, they certainly deserve attention of those who enjoy wandering about the Šumava mountains. The pedestrian frontier crossing point the Vltava Spring – Siebensteinkopf operates the year round. The ideal starting points include the villages of Kvilda, Filipova Huť, Modrava or Borová Lada.
The possibility of the frontier crossing offers many opportunities to tourists, even to those who are not much experienced in or fit for hiking. The interesting destinations include the peak of Siebensteinkopf mountain with the rock formation Siebensteinfelsen (Sedmiskalí) or the Reschbachklause water reservoir with the way back across the border checkpoint Bučina or the other checkpoint of Teufelsbachtasse below Bučina, which is known less. The Green Buses from Kvilda may be used to get to Bučina.

Les (Forest) instructive path (Borová Lada)

The starting point of the 4 km path can be found in Borová Lada. It informs about forest, its significance, thoughtful and nature-friendly forestry, forest functions, raw materials that the forest ecosystem offers ana bout the forest as a landscape-forming element. The path leads past the lookout tower beneath Vyhlídka mountain, from where we can admire the view of Borová Lada and surrounding peat bogs.

View of the area of Borová Lada from the lookout tower at Vyhlídka mountain

Comfortable and pleasant walk of about 3 km. From Borová Lada take the road in direction of Kvilda and after 500 metres turn to the instructive path Les (Forest). While mounting through the forest, follow the signs with the picture of woodpecker. Past the information panels you will finally reach the lookout tower beneath the top of Vyhlídka hill, which offers nice view of the Borová Lada surroundings. The instructive path will take you to the road going to Knížecí Pláně. From here head back to Borové Lady past the gamekeeper's house (Hájovna).
We suggest to combine this walk with the visit of Chalupská Fen. Start in Borová Lada and take the road to Kvilda. After one kilometre, turn to Svinná Lada and from here walk on the wooden footpath along the instructive trail of Chalupská Fen. Afterwards return some 400 metres on the road to Borová Lada and continue along the instructive path Les (Forest) to Vyhlídka hill.

Cross-Country Skiing Hints

Around Chalupská Fen

This rather easy round trip of about 10 km with the moderate elevation leads around Chalupská and Novosvětská Fens. You can go in both directions, we will nevertheless describe the clockwise one, which is more favourable for skiers.
The starting point is directly in the village in front of the Municipal office. Set out on the track along the road to Kvilda and cross the race by the comfortable foot bridge and than the stream of the Teplá Vltava (by the road bridge). After less than a kilometre divert from the road in direction of Svinná Lada and past the Information Centre of the Šumava National Park start to mount slightly across the meadows towards Nové Hutě - Polesí. You will get there after about 3 kilometres. From here you can turn to get to Nové Hutě, Pláně and further on to Churáňov. To continue the round trip though, take the eastern direction along the road from Nové Hutě to Borová Lada and Šindlov, the highest point of our route that offers nice views of Nové Hutě and Přilba, as well as the valley of Borové Lady, Chalupská Fen and the hilltops of Homole and Vyhlídka. From Šindlov you will get comfortably to the settlement of Nový Svět (with further attractive views) and from here descend safely to Borové Lady.

Pláně – Churáňov

We have already described a part of this route in the previous round trip and will therefore continue from Nové Hutě - Polesí. First you will have to overcome a steeper rise, which is getting more moderate towards its end. After less then 2 km you will get to the village of Nové Hutě. Continue another 2,5 km across the meadows to the Pláně crossroads, where you can refresh yourself at a small snack bar by the car park, and go on in northern direction for another 2 km to Churáňov - first moderate mounting and then moderate descending. Somewhere in the middle of this last section it is possible to turn right to about 400 m distant ski jumps.

Borová Lada – Knížecí Pláně

The extinct village of Knížecí Pláně is one of the most interesting tourist destinations from Borová Lada (about 5 km to the south). The ski track is diverted from the direct road to Knížecí Pláně, which is snow-ploughed in winter season and may be therefore used for walking trips. Our ski track begins at the meadows behind the village and itse first kilometre leads along the aforementioned road, then it turns right and mounts to Nová Boubská. From here the track goes almost flat for 3 km along the border of the meadow at Knížecí Pláně and after another kilometre gets to the crossroads of Knížecí Pláně. Here the track forks and goes either to the right to Bučina or to the left to the Pension Knížecí Pláně. To return to Borová Lada, take the same route.

Knížecí Pláně – Bučina and back

Bučina is an extinct borderline village situated about 2,5 km to the west of Knížecí Pláně that used to be (with its altitude of 1160 m) the highest elevated settlement in the Czech Republic before the World War II. It is therefore obvious that we have to mount steeply to get there. To get to the top, take the steeper right track from Furik crossroads, which is better maintained and leads in between the bold stone drifts. After the hard 2-kilometre mounting you will get the the chapel in Bučina, from where you can relish beautiful views of Knížecí Pláně, the Boubín massive or Trojmezí and - at favourable weather conditions - even the views of the Alps (from the left-hand side: Gr. Priel, Dachstein, Watzman). The track continues along the path of Funsterau – Kvilda from the frontier crossing point, which is open for skiers during winter season. To get back to Knížecí Pláně, take the less used track across Mlýnské Chaloupky, where you can perfectly take advantage of the acquired elevation and return in a comfortable and moderate descend.

Knížecí Pláně – Žďárské lake – Polka
Knížecí Pláně – Žďárské lake – Strážný

In eastern direction from Knížecí Pláně the track continues for about 1 km on flat ground to Žďárské saddle (view of Luzný from the forest clearance). Here the track forks. If you take the right path, you will get by moderate and long descent around Žďárské lake to 7 km distant village of Strážný.The left track first moderately climbs along the ridge towards the hill of Polecký Vrch, then descends to the meadows of Nová Polka and further on to Polka.
