Rabí (castle)

Castle Rabí

The largest castle ruin in Bohemia dominates over the village of the same name on the route between Sušice and Horažovice. The oldest part of the castle dates back to the period after 1300 and is represented by the stately cylindrical tower with a narrow  bailey and outer enclosure. While besieging the castle in 1421 with his army, Jan Žižka lost his second eye. At the end of the 15th century the castle was greatly expanded into a magnificent residence and the settlement round the castle was promoted to a town. The castle was declared a National Historical Monument in 1978 and underwent extensive reconstruction between 1979 and 1985.
