Church of St. Wenceslas

Church of St. Wenceslas
The Deacon's church was built in the mid 14th century, shortly after building of the town rampart (the main fortification forms its southern enclosure wall) next to an older chapel of the 13th century that was built in as a sacristy. The church originally had two towers that nevertheless fell down in the great fire of 1707 together with a part of the aisle vault. Later on a smaller tower was built and the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Another reconstruction of 1884-1885 gave pseudo-Gothic elements to the church. The tombstones in the paving of the church from the period after 1560 belong to local nobles and burghers. The altar picture of the Patron Saint of Bohemia, St. Wenceslas, is from 1861. The altar displays sculptures of St. Blaise, St. Procopius, and St. Erasmus from 1659. Attentive visitors of the church may perceive cannonball in the church wall - a souvenir of the Thirty Years' War with Swedes.
