Chapel of the Guardian Angel

The chapel popularly called "Andělíček" (Angel Child) is situated on the top of Stráž hill (lookout point). The Early Baroque Chapel was built by the Order of Capuchins in 1682-1683 as a chapel for pilgrims. In 1735 it was encircled by arcades with four corner chapels consecrated to Our Lady, to Saint John Nepomucene, Saint Florian and Saint Mary Magdalena. During the church reformation under the reign of Joseph II many monasteries and pilgrimage places were cancelled, including the Chapel of the Guardian Angel. The building was purchased for only 50 guldens by Prokop Harrer in 1792. The chapel was opened again in 1799. On the occasion of 200th anniversary of its foundation, the chapel was restored and rebuilt in pseudo-Romanesque style in 1882. Its present appearance originates from 1936 and represents the work of the Sušice architect Karel Houra. There are only few pilgrimage places consecrated to the Guardian Angel and the Sušice chapel is undoubtedly the most significant one in the Czech Republic. According to the records, some 10 000 people came to the pilgrimage place in 1908.

The Guardian Angels saint's day was set on 2nd October and spread to the whole church by the Pope Clement X in 1670.
