The square is a real heart and centre of the town and acquired its today's appearance after the extensive fire of the town in 1707, which spread in a half hour about the inner town and to both suburbs. There were 30 victims and a greater part of the town was destroyed. Svoboda square in Sušice is a lively heart of the town with many shops, restaurants, cafes and offices, as well as a place enticing for relaxation and for visiting of several tourist places of interest. From the Town Hall - the dominant of the square - it is just a few steps to other interesting places:

Fountain

The Empire style fountain in front of the Town Hall was built in 1783 by a stone-cutter from Horažďovice. The water-jet was installed there in 1914.

The Stone of Unhappiness

It is embedded amongst the cobblestones somewhere in between the Town Hall and the Empire style fountain. Various legends relate to the stone. One of them dates back to 1672 and tells about a certain knight staying as a visitor at Volšov fort nearby Sušice. One day the knight got drunk, sat on a horse, took out a gun and shot two bullets into the painting of Saint Anna placed in the nearby chapel. Then he set out for the ride to Sušice, where - in the middle of the square - his horse fell down, the knight broke his neck and died on the spot. The point where the knight killed himself was marked with a stone. Ever since everybody has been avoiding it and bewared crossing it not to attract bad luck or misfortune.
