The Stifter's Memorial is erected high on the top of the side rocky wall beyond the north-west lakeside. After the death of Adalbert Stifter - called "the Šumava poet" - on 28th January 1868, his memorial started to be widely discussed. These protracted discussions ended up in 1877 by the memorial unveiling in places where we can find it to this day. The memorial was also dedicated to "all the Šumava folks".
A story about five stonecutters building the memorial is connected with it. They were meeting here each ear and if any of them died in the past year, his name's initials were blackened by one of them - Franz Samer, who was the last one surviving and therefore his name's initials have never been blackened.
