Lookout twer at Boubín

A 21-meter-high wooden lookout tower sits atop Boubín hill. Tourists can climb the wooden staircase inside the tower, which leads to a gallery on the 7th floor. Entry to the lookout tower is free of charge. The base of the tower measures 7 x 7 metres, narrowing to 4 x 4 metres at the top. It was built between July and November 2004 on the site of an original wooden triangular point with a viewing gallery. Cardinal Bedřich Schwarzenberg visited Boubín on 3rd August 1867; the spot is marked by a stone with a plaque commemorating the visit.

How to get there:
Follow the blue-marked tourist trail from Kubova Huť, starting at the railway. Turn right at the old army bunker onto a stony path, which will take you to a tourist shelter at Bázumské meadows. Approximately two kilometres further the path will lead you up through noticeably wilder forest, then follow the wooden walkway for several hundred metres. You can relax and enjoy a snack at the top of Boubín before continuing the hike. You cannot miss the commemorative stone dedicated to Cardinal Friedrich von Schwarzenberg, who visited the peak as far back as 1867. This was, at the time, a unique journey; then, the forests were much less accessible, and, apart from romantics, mystics and the Cardinal, no one was really interested in this area. Boubín hill is 1,362 metres high and, if the lookout tower (exactly 21 metres high) is included, it is higher than Plechý mountain (1378 metres), the highest mountain in the Czech part of the Šumava mountain range. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Alps. The view of Boubín virgin forest is also remarkable as its composition is visibly different from the surrounding forests.
