Saddle (Sedlo) nearby Albrechtice with new outlook tower


The Celts settled Saddle (Sedlo) hill nearby Sušice three thousand years ago already an built here, at the altitude of 902m, practically impregnable fortified settlement. With its length of over 400 meters and width of up to 114 meters, the site of the settlement on the Saddle was an imposing structure indeed. The south-west border of the settlement lied at the edge of several tens of meters deep steep rock depressions forming invincible obstacle.
Several marked tourist paths offering impressive views of the wide scenery (Kašperk Castle, Svatobor hill, Poledník hill and other picturesque Šumava nooks) from the newly built lookout tower or rocky peaks lead over the top of Saddle hill.

Giant Castle (Obří hrad)


Giant Castle is the highest situated Celtic fort in Bohemia. The remains of the fort ramparts were not discovered but in 1926. The Celtic fort dating the most likely back to the 1st-2nd century B.C. served as a protection of paddy-fields on the Losenice River. Recent research also mentions the possibility that the fort fenced in a sacred site.
In close vicinity of the fort to the west we can see a stone run as well as information panels of the instructive trail called "Celts in the Šumava". These information boards acquaint the visitors with the history of the Šumava settlement by Celts and describe the remainders of the Celtic fort Giant Castle near Popelná. The starting point of the 1,5 km long trail (3 km in total with the way back along the same path) is the car park in Popelná, accessible by the narrow road from Nicov.
