Vimperk

Vimperk, a town of 8090 inhabitants, is situated in the Šumava region. Its position in the Volyňka River valley in the toothills of Boubín moutains, and the altitude of 700 metres above sea level make it an ideal starting point for trips in the Šumava countryside. Tourists can use a network of cycling trails, theme trails, circular hiking paths, as well as cross contry ski tracks in winter. One of the theme trails, called The Šumava sights valley, takes the visitors through the history of the town and the surrounding area. The circircuit abounds in architectural sights, including the castle, once an important fortress, and a 14th-century town centre with a number of well - preserved buildings.

The circuit starts in the square/náměstí Svobody/, at No. 8.

HOUSE NO. 8
A uniquely well-preserved Gothic vault with an original staircase. The house was later rebuilt in the Baroque style.

TOWN WALLS
Remaining parts of the town walls have been preserved next to houses in the square. The oldest part of the fortifications can be seen on the right-hand side of Zlatá stezka St. leading from the square down to the castle.

WAY OF THE CROSS
In 1877, Johann Steinbrener, a burgher of Vimperk and a printer, decided to build a way of the cross on Honigbühel-Flur hill.

HASELBURG
A unique 1479-artillery bastion, standing on its own as an outpost of the castle. It used to be part of the fortifications and was to protect the castle from the north.

LOWER CASTLE
What is now the first countryard was once an outer ward of the castle, separated from it by a moat. It constituted the economic background of the castle, and in the 16th century it included a brewery and gardens with arcades.

UPPER CASTLE
The oldest parts of toda,s castle core date back to around 1250s. Now there is museum with permanent expositions devoted to glassmaking, printing and nature of the Šumava.

It was founded in the late 13th century and later rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style.

FOURTEEN HOLYHELPERS CHAPEL
The Baroque chapel situated close to St. Bartholomew,s church was fonded by Michal Müller, a glassworks foreman, in 1708.

ČERNÁ BRÁNA/BLACK GATE/
Guarding the access route to the castle form the town, it was part of a system of fortifications built from as early as 1479.

U JELENA HOUSE/STAG HOUSE/
The corner, two-storey house No. 61, was originally built in the Gothic style and later went through a reconstruction in the Renaissance style. The richly decorated front reflects Classicism, with remains of Rococo wall paintings, and an oriel on the second floor, supported by corbels. The corner bears a sculpture of a stag,s head, hence the name.

LOG HOUSES NO. 16 AND 18
Typical examples of the vernacular architecture of the Šumava region, as well as its oldest speciment in Vimperk.
