HORŠOVSKÝ TÝN

Horšovský Týn – ford where the business road from Regensburg nach Prag crossed the river Radbuza. It was permanently settled probably as early as the 10th century where there was a merchant settlement nereby. In the 13th century, under bishop Jan III. from Dražice, a solid castle, an early gothic palace was built on a rocky ness. Under Arnošt from Pardubice Horšovský Tyn was promoted to be a town. During the Hussite Wars the castle as well as the town resisted two sieges. Under the Lobkowitz family in 1547 the Rennaissance reconstruction takes place after a fire. After 1622 earl Maximilián Trauttmansdorff gets this confiscated vaste complex very cheaply and it remains the property of this family till 1945.

Horšovský Týn was declared to be Historical Town Reserve because of it general probity and the amount of important sights.

The dominance is the state castle without doubt which deservedly belongs among the most important architectural sights in West Bohemia. Public can see it in 5 routes: old castle, castle, kitchen, burgraviate (town museum) and coat of arms chamber. The historical town is formed with the St. Peter and Paul church with view-tower, town hall and many town-houses. There is a Capuchins´monastery a bit aside. St. Apolinair church is a sight of 1st category together with the late gothic pilgrimage church St. Anna with the tomb of the last owners of the castle – the Trattmansdorff family.

About 3 km south-west from the town there are natural open-air bath, cottages and camp „Podhájí“.

Among the most important cultural events in the town belong Anna feast in July (23. – 25. 7. 2004)  and old Bohemian Christmas market.
