Museum of Glass

Extraordinary quality and artistic craftsmanship of the products of local glass-makers, glass-cutters and glass-painters is presented by the exposition of the Museum of Glass situated at the premisses of the Municipal Office. The glass collection belongs amongst the few ones preserved in the place of original operation of glass-works. The village of Lenora itself was founded in 1834 in connection with the glass-works establishment as a settlement of glass-makers and its whole history is linked to the operation of the factory.

The Museum of Glass houses a collection of glass objects originating from the period between roughly 1880 and 1980. They are products of the Lenora glass-works and the last remainders of the extensive glass sample rooms of the company of Jan Meyr (nephew of Jan Meyer and son of Vilém Kralik). The basis of the collection consisted of the Kraliks' family collection, which was stored in the Kraliks' Villa after 1945 and in 1975 moved to the building of the Municipal Authority. From the late 1940's to 1980 the collection was gradually complemented with samples of the Lenora glass-works products.

By an unfortunate coincidence there have not been many products, tools and samplers preserved in Lenora. A large part of the ancient sample rooms of one of the best Czech glass-works was destroyed due to an insensitive approach of the communist management in the mid 1970's during the factory reconstruction. It was only by chance that several hundreds of glass items were saved against destruction at the time. These are currently in property of the Museum of the Šumava in Sušice, as well as a small part of samplers that were also saved in the same period. Within the scope of the emergency action, a part of objects from the glass-works after its cessation in 1995 was also transported to the Museum of the Šumava, because the future existence of the museum in Lenora was rather uncertain and it was necessary to preserve the objects at least to certain extent.
