Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (Kostel Panny Marie Bolestné)

Church of Our Lady of Sorrows
Church of Our Lady of Sorrows

The listed historical monument of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is today's dominant of the village. It was adapted from the original chapel in centre of the sparse village and consecrated in 1773. The original chapel was standing on the estates of Koller's farmstead, which is why the church is often familiarly called  Koller's church. The building suffered from substantial devastation in the period from the World War II until 1992, when it was restored and subsequently, in July 1993, reconsecrated within the scope of the Czech-German border cooperation with the association of the German natives Künische Gemeinde Hammern. The church interior is decorated with the Baroque painting of Virgin Mary borrowed from the Religious Depository of the Prague Archdiocese, the sculpture of Jesus Christ donated by local native from Hüttstatt (Strážiště) Otta Kolloros, Madonna of Virgin Mother with infant Jesus, the folk sculpture of lime wood from a demolished Nýrsko church and contemporary glass underpainting by the Prague Professor Jiří Patera.
With establishment of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and the parish office in 1785, the village also started to manage its register, which had earlier been maintained for the Hamry registry district in Nýrsko since 1654 and in Dešenice since 1681. Register records were maintained by the Roman-Catholic parish office in Hamry until 1946, when they were taken over by the parish office in Nýrsko and after 1950 by local authorities in Žlezná Ruda, Zelená Lhota, Dešenice and finally Nýrsko again.
In the open space in front of the church there is a cultural-historical monument - the granite fountain bearing the year of its foundation 1846. The fountain was once stolen from Hamry and the thieves tried to transport it across the border, but fortunately they did not succeed in doing so. In one period the fountain also served for storage of molasses designed as the livestock feed.
