Chapel of St. Anna and Stations of the Cross

Chapel of St. Anna and Stations of the Cross
Legend of a miracle by the Chapel of St. Anna near Borová Lada in the Šumava

The place for building of the chapel, which was later consecrated to Saint Anna, was chosen according to a legend telling the story of snow falling once in summer. The snow allegedly melted everywhere on the same day, except for a single place where it remained. This place was selected for building of the chapel. According to some information, the stone from a ruined watchtower standing on the top of the hill beyond the Way of the Cross was used as construction material. The chapel was built from the order of Franz and Dorothea Müllers, the landholders from Borová Lada, in 1860. The chapel was consecrated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on 16th September 1860.
At the end of the Way of the Cross an iron cross was erected on 18th September 1864, which is the single thing that has preserved to date. Close to the chapel there was a spring of miraculous healing water. The chapel was originally decorated with a painting bearing a Czech-German inscription about a legend that said: "In this chapel, the five-years old Marie Sovová of Velký Ždíkov started to walk for the first time in her life in September 1871 after an ardent prayer to Our Lady." In 1801 two maple trees were planted on the left and the right sides of the chapel on the occasion of the marriage of Crown Prince Rudolph with Princess Stephanie. The chapel was demolished in the communist era and later a wooden cross was placed at the place.
The newly built chapel was consecrated on 30th July 2006 by Msgr. Karel Fořt, who had said the last mass at the original chapel in 1949. Ironically, the last mass was served to members of a pioneer unit (organization of communist youth).

Legend of a miracle by the Chapel of St. Anna near Borová Lada in the Šumava.

The legend narrates about a tradesman who was returning home from his business journey in the Bavarian Freyung to nearby Františkov. The wife and the blind daughter were accompanying the businessman at his journey. They stopped at the Chapel of St. Anna near Borová Lada as always to cross themselves and to say a short prayer to thank St. Anna for their successful journey. When they set out on the way home, their carriage crashed into a stone after only a short while. A wheel was damaged and the tradesman had to go to the nearby mill in Borová Lada to get it fixed. His wife and blind daughter remained at the chapel and were saying prayer for help in troubles. At sunset, the blind daughter suddenly cried in the middle of the prayer and said she could see the painting hanging above the altar. She could see for the first time.
